An escalating number of unvaccinated
pets – dogs, cats and rabbits – coupled with the widespread incidence of
many infectious diseases revealed by CICADA, has prompted Intervet to launch
the first National Vaccination Month (March 2008).
Central to the success of this major
consumer promotion will be a nationally co-ordinated amnesty encouraging
owners of unvaccinated dogs, cats and rabbits to have their pets fully
vaccinated for the cost of a booster.

Important
Information.
Spay/Neuter
Policy.
From January
2008 Dogs Trust are discontinuing the scheme whereby all the dogs we rehomed
were able to be spayed/ neutered prior to rehoming.
This is
a disaster for the many rescues who will be affected by this decision.
Words can not
describe how disappointed we are, especially since ALL the evidence
points to the value of such a scheme and to its success in previous years
of reducing the number of unwanted litters, stray dogs and the number of
dogs being put to sleep.
Our funds
simply do not allow us to sterilize all the dogs we rehouse, and so in
future this will have to be done on a priority basis and we are currently
examining other alternatives.
The
Ted Memorial Cup
Wonder dog!
Rescued Jake is honoured for his hard work
A POLICE dog who began life tormented
by thugs is now the proud owner of a special award after saving a woman’s
life.
Last month, The Journal told how
Northumbria Police dog Jake’s saved a woman’s life.
But Jake has now gained formal recognition
for his hard work in the anxious search for a 39-year-old woman who went
missing from her South Shields home on August 19 – by being awarded a trophy.
The woman was found by Jake unconscious
and hidden in deep shrubbery. Staff at the German Shepherd Dog Rescue and
Rehoming Centre North-East, which rescued Jake three years ago, were so
impressed when they read of his actions they decided to give him the Ted
Trophy. The trophy is presented to a deserving dog each year in memory
of a former Durham police dog.
Alyson Lockwood from the centre
presented Jake with the accolade.
She said Jake came to the centre
at seven weeks after being tied to a lamppost and tortured with fireworks.
She said: “We are really pleased
Jake has found his niche in life doing something he clearly enjoys and
is good at.”
Jake’s handler PC Alistair CairnieCoates
added: “I’m really pleased that Jake has been recognised in this way but
it is also recognition for all working police dogs and their handlers.”

Fostering
We are limited
in the number of dogs we can re-home in the North East area by the
availability of temporary foster homes.
Are you at
home during the day? Do you have a secure garden? Do you love dogs? Then
why not become a foster home?
Please email
us for further details.
Dog food,
blankets, towels and bedding always needed.
The Ted
Memorial Trophy.

Each
year the Ted Memorial Trophy is presented to the owner of a special Rescue
dog. The trophy is given to us by Frank Lucas who has provided this award
each year since the death of retired police dog ‘Ted’.
Ted was Franks friend and companion for many years until, sadly, he developed
the crippling condition of chronic degenerative radiculomyelopathy myleopathy
(CDRM ) , which attacks the nervous system.
We are pleased
to announce that the “2007 Ted Memorial Trophy” has been awarded to Davie
Armitage and his rescue dog Rocky.
Davie has worked very hard socialising Rocky with other dogs and we feel
he is deserving of the trophy for all his efforts.
