Don't walk behind me~ I may not lead.

What is GSD Rehoming?

German Shepherd Dog Rehoming aim to offer assistance  and advice on GSD's. Our primary aim it to provide support to enable owners to deal with and manage their problems.
We are Members of Canine Behaviour Centre. (Certificate in Dog Psychology)
Associate member of Animal Care College.(Certificate in Advanced Animal Health Care) .
We receive 100's of calls each year from dog owners seeking help and advice, sadly we are not able to help every dog that is referred to us because of our limited resources.
We work closely with other rescue/advice organisations in the North and in Scotland and are actively involved with Federation of Animal Welfare North East (FAWNE).

So what causes the problems? Why would people not want this lovely breed that has so much to offer? and why do so many problems exist?
These are common questions, with many and varied answers. But the main reason is that people see the lovely ball of fur as a puppy, fall in love with it, take it home, never taking into consideration the care, commitment and exercise a puppy will require when it gets older. Problems generally surface when the puppy starts to chew, shed its coat, or grows into a boisterous youngster that they can not control. Instead of taking the time to train their pet, or learn how to cope with the characteristics of the breed, they often turn it outside  where it begins to bark and annoy the neighbours. A German Shepherd Dog NEEDS to be part of a family ~ it likes nothing more than to be part of a family it is part of the nature of the breed and nothing you will do can break them of the desire to be by your side and please you.

How is GSD Rehoming North East  Structured?

GSD Rehoming is based in the North East UK and has been in operation there for over 25 years.
It is an all volunteer organisation. We have limited accommodation where dogs can be cared for .
Dogs are assessed before they are accepted onto the rehoming scheme and are placed with one of the volunteers foster homes when ever possible or in local authority approved boarding kennels~ Rockverne Boarding Kennels, Greenside.
Our veterinary surgeon is Tim Bradbury of Tyne Vet. Clinic, Crawcrook who we can recommend without hesitation.

We are not in the business of becoming a convenient drop off service for people who no longer wish to keep their dogs.

We have strict guidelines before we can assist. While this may sound cruel, consider who pays for this service: Who pays for the treatment of the sick dogs,  placement of the healthy dogs, and shelter for the elderly dogs.
The owners? NO.
The funds come from the rehoming budget, and ultimately, from the pockets or fundraising efforts of those actually doing the rehoming work.

Acceptable conditions.

GSD Rehoming will accept GSD's onto the  rehoming  scheme where possible for any of the following reasons:

  • If the life is directly threatened by the present living conditions. (Note to owners~ If we consider that the dog has been neglected or abused, we will inform the appropriate authorities).
  • If the animal is not human- aggressive and/or not terribly sick, but is scheduled for destruction in another animal shelter.
  • If another rehoming/rescue scheme out side of the breed accepts it and needs assistance.
  • Dog rescue can help if you have an unwanted litter of puppies. We can find good homes for them and spay your bitch.

Unacceptable conditions.

  • If the animal is found running loose and has no other place to go. Stray dogs should be taken to the Local Authority Dog shelter.
  • The dog is subject to the dangerous Dogs Act.
  • The dog is known to be human aggressive.
  • The animal is severely ill and probably not able to be rehomed.
  • The owner simply can not keep it but has not tried to find it a home.
  • The owner has grown tired of it but has not tried to find it a home.
  • The owner wants rid of it because it is too old or too ill.
Special considerations.

  • GSD Rehoming often takes into consideration special circumstances that may affect the above policies. Always tell us everything when calling about rehoming. We evaluate each case on individual merit, so you do no justice in withholding information which may convince us to assist.
